Indiana No Chase Law
Statewide conditions
Does Indiana have a no-chase law? Partly — Indiana sets statewide conditions on police pursuits, but it is not a blanket "no-chase" jurisdiction.
What governs pursuits in Indiana
IC 5-2-1-9 (statewide minimum standards mandate); Law Enforcement Training Board 'Uniform Statewide Policy on Minimum Standards for Vehicle Pursuits,' effective Jan. 1, 2023
Indiana Code 5-2-1-9 required the Law Enforcement Training Board to adopt a uniform statewide minimum-standards policy for vehicle pursuits, which took effect January 1, 2023, and binds all Indiana law enforcement agencies (not just an 'adopt some policy' requirement — it sets substantive statewide criteria). Officers may only pursue based on a totality-of-circumstances balancing test: pursuit should not begin or continue where the need for immediate apprehension is very low and public-safety risk is high, weighing the underlying offense, danger to the public, traffic/road conditions, and vehicle/equipment limitations.
Will police chase a motorcycle in Indiana?
Indiana's statewide minimum standards don't name motorcycles specifically. Deciding whether to chase a fleeing motorcyclist falls under the same risk-balancing test applied to any pursuit — officers weigh the offense and public-safety danger, and heightened crash risk to a motorcyclist can factor into an agency's decision to break off.
No US state has a literal law forbidding officers from chasing motorcycles. What riders call a "no-chase law" is nearly always a department policy that tells officers to break off a pursuit when the danger to the public outweighs the arrest — and fleeing remains a crime in Indiana regardless. See the state-by-state motorcycle guide for how this works everywhere.
Recent changes
Statewide minimum-standards pursuit policy took effect Jan. 1, 2023 (adopted Nov. 7, 2022); a 2026 bill (HB1155) further addressing pursuit-related provisions was introduced in the Indiana legislature.
